Tuis is a welcoming rural community nestled in the green mountains of Turrialba, Costa Rica. It’s the perfect base for mission teams to serve, learn, and connect with local families. Surrounded by coffee farms, rivers, and tropical forests, Tuis offers both the beauty of nature and the warmth of genuine Costa Rican hospitality. Known as one of the safest districts in the country, it provides a peaceful environment where groups can focus on meaningful work, language learning, and spiritual growth while experiencing authentic community life.

At the heart of Tuis, our local Christian mission welcomes volunteers to share God’s love through simple acts of service. Teams can participate by singing during worship, teaching children, helping organize activities, or even setting up chairs before a service. Every small act becomes a beautiful expression of faith and fellowship within the community. Read More!

Groups also serve in nearby public schools with limited resources, where they can make a lasting impact through hands-on projects. Volunteers may help with construction, painting, or maintenance, while also spending meaningful time with the children—sharing smiles, stories, and encouragement in both Spanish and English.

Mission teams often visit low-income families in the community to offer practical help and heartfelt connection. Volunteers assist in repairing homes, delivering food, and blessing households through prayer, conversation, and companionship. These encounters not only bring hope and relief to families but also strengthen the spirit of unity and compassion that defines our mission.

During their stay, group members are usually divided and placed individually or in pairs with local host families from the Tuis community. This arrangement allows each participant to experience authentic cultural immersion, practice Spanish daily, and build personal relationships within a safe and welcoming environment. Beyond language learning, this model also blesses local families economically in a region with limited employment opportunities—creating a meaningful exchange that impacts both the visitors and the community in lasting ways.

More Than a Place to Stay

Living with a Costa Rican host family is one of the most meaningful parts of the CISA group experience. During their stay, team members are usually placed individually or in pairs with local families, allowing for deeper cultural immersion and daily Spanish practice. Each participant enjoys three home-cooked meals per day (with lunches at CISA on school days), laundry service, internet access, and a private bedroom with either a shared or private bathroom. More than accommodation, this experience creates genuine connections—students share daily routines, conversations, and faith with their host families. Most homes are within walking distance or a short bus ride from the school, and before arrival, each participant receives a Homestay Profile with photos and details about their host family to ensure a smooth and welcoming start.

Thank you for another amazing time in Tuis— the students had a wonderful time with their host families, grew in their Spanish, and really loved the excursions. We can’t wait to return! –

Groups at CISA combine their mission work with exciting adventure experiences that make every trip unforgettable. Located in the heart of Turrialba—a region surrounded by rivers, mountains, and lush coffee farms—participants can enjoy whitewater rafting, canyoning, hiking, and visits to waterfalls and local coffee estates. These adventures give mission teams the opportunity to relax, connect, and experience the beauty of Costa Rica firsthand while continuing to practice Spanish in real-life, meaningful contexts.
